Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Acupuncture
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as CFS, is a complex chronic illness characterised by significant fatigue and a reduced capacity for activity that is not resolved by ordinary rest.
People with CFS may also experience post-exertion malaise, poor sleep, difficulty concentrating, pain, headaches, dizziness and other symptoms. The severity and experience of the condition can vary considerably between individuals.
Acupuncture for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Acupuncture may be used as a complementary therapy to support people living with CFS and some of the symptoms associated with the condition.
Treatment is individualised and may focus on areas such as sleep, pain, stress, digestive symptoms and overall wellbeing.
Importantly, treatment should respect the person’s energy limitations and post-exertional malaise. Acupuncture sessions can be adapted to the individual’s capacity, with gentler treatments used where appropriate.
Red Light therapy can also be beneficial in supporting patients with CFS, helping to regulate the nervous system, support sleep and ease pain, while boosting mitochondrial function.
Chronic Fatigue Through a Chinese Medicine Lens
Chinese medicine looks beyond fatigue as an isolated symptom.
Treatment considers the individual’s broader pattern, including energy, sleep, digestion, pain, temperature, stress and other accompanying symptoms. Two people with CFS may therefore receive very different treatments.
The aim is not to push the body beyond its capacity, but to provide gentle, individualised support while addressing the patterns and symptoms affecting the person’s wellbeing.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine should complement appropriate medical care and are not a replacement for medical assessment or management of CFS.
