Moxibustion (Moxa) in Melbourne
What is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion, commonly known as moxa, is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy involving the controlled burning of dried mugwort (Artemisia) to provide therapeutic warmth to specific acupuncture points or areas of the body.
Moxa may be held above the skin, used with specialised equipment, or incorporated alongside acupuncture depending on the treatment.
Moxa Through a Chinese Medicine Lens
Within Chinese medicine, moxa is traditionally used for its warming and Yang-supporting qualities. It may be selected when a presentation involves patterns associated with Cold, deficiency or impaired circulation of Qi and Blood.
The combination of acupuncture and moxibustion has been used for centuries, with the two therapies often complementing one another within an individualised treatment.
What Does Moxa Feel Like?
Moxibustion produces a gentle, penetrating warmth and is generally a relaxing part of treatment. The moxa is carefully controlled so that it warms the area without burning the skin.
Moxa has a distinctive herbal, smoky aroma, although different techniques and forms, including smokeless moxa can be used depending on the clinical setting.
A Traditional Use in Pregnancy
One of the better-known applications of moxibustion is the traditional use of moxa at the acupuncture point Bladder 67 (Zhiyin) in cases of breech presentation.
