Male Fertility & Acupuncture

Male fertility can be influenced by many different factors, including sperm concentration, motility, morphology, DNA integrity, hormonal health and overall reproductive function.

Lifestyle factors such as stress, sleep, diet, alcohol, smoking, heat exposure and general health can also influence sperm health. Because sperm take approximately three months to develop, improving reproductive health is often a process that takes time.

Acupuncture for Male Fertility

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine may be used as a complementary approach for men looking to support their fertility and reproductive health.

Treatment is individualised and may focus on reproductive health, stress and nervous system regulation, sleep and other factors that may be relevant to sperm health.

Importantly, sperm production takes time. The development of mature sperm takes approximately 74 days, with additional time required for maturation and transport through the reproductive tract. For this reason, when working on male fertility, I generally recommend allowing around three months of treatment where possible.

This gives us the opportunity to support the body throughout an entire cycle of sperm development rather than beginning treatment immediately before conception or fertility treatment.

Acupuncture can also be incorporated alongside IVF, ICSI and other assisted reproductive treatments, supporting the male partner as part of the overall fertility journey.

Male Fertility Through a Chinese Medicine Lens

Chinese medicine looks beyond a semen analysis alone and considers the individual’s broader reproductive and general health.

Treatment may take into account libido, morning erections, ejaculation, energy, sleep, stress, digestion and other accompanying symptoms, as well as available semen analysis and blood test results.

Where appropriate, treatment may combine acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Chinese medicine dietetics and lifestyle advice to build an individualised approach to reproductive health.
