Acupuncture for Labour Preparation & Induction
As your due date approaches, it’s completely normal to experience a mixture of excitement, anticipation and perhaps a little anxiety about when labour will begin.
Acupuncture offers a gentle, natural approach to supporting your body during the final weeks of pregnancy. Many women choose acupuncture as part of their birth preparation to encourage relaxation, prepare the body for labour and support the natural processes involved in childbirth.
How can acupuncture support labour?
Acupuncture is commonly used during the final weeks of pregnancy to help prepare the body for labour. Treatment is tailored to the individual and may assist by supporting several important aspects of labour preparation.
Cervical Preparation
As labour approaches, the cervix naturally begins to soften, shorten and prepare for opening. This process, known as cervical ripening, is an important part of preparing for birth.
From a Western perspective, acupuncture may support the physiological changes that occur during this stage, while from a Chinese medicine perspective it aims to promote the smooth flow of Qi and Blood in preparation for labour.
Promoting Relaxation
Feeling calm and supported is an important part of preparing for birth. Stress and anxiety can influence the body’s natural hormonal responses leading up to labour.
Many women find acupuncture deeply relaxing, helping to calm the nervous system and create an environment that supports the body’s natural preparation for labour.
Supporting the Natural Onset of Labour
Once your pregnancy has reached full term, specific acupuncture points may be selected with the intention of encouraging the body’s natural labour processes. Treatment does not force labour to begin but may gently support the body when it is approaching readiness.
Potential Benefits
Acupuncture may help to:
Support the body’s natural preparation for labour
Encourage the natural onset of labour once full term has been reached
Promote relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety
Ease pregnancy-related aches and discomfort
Support cervical preparation
Potentially reduce the need for medical induction in some women*
Potentially shorten the duration of labour in some women*
*Research findings vary, and individual responses differ. Acupuncture should be considered a supportive therapy and does not guarantee that labour will begin.
When Should I Start?
I generally recommend beginning labour preparation acupuncture from 36 weeks.
Starting at this stage gives us time to gently prepare your body over several treatments, rather than trying to rush the process close to your due date. Even if you begin later than 36 weeks, acupuncture can still be beneficial, but starting earlier allows for a more gradual and supportive approach.
Treatment plans are always individualised and will be adapted according to your stage of pregnancy, your birth plan and the recommendations of your maternity care team.
