Gua Sha in Melbourne

What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicine technique in which a smooth-edged tool is gently stroked across the skin.

Traditionally, Gua Sha is used to encourage the movement of Qi and Blood, release areas of stagnation and promote circulation through the channels and tissues.

In modern practice, Gua Sha is commonly incorporated into treatment for muscular tightness, pain, tension and restricted movement, particularly around the neck, shoulders and back.

What to Expect

Gua Sha creates a distinctive rubbing or scraping sensation but should remain comfortable and can be adjusted to suit the individual.

Treatment can temporarily produce red or purple markings known traditionally as Sha. These marks vary between individuals and generally fade naturally over the following days.

Gua Sha may be used on its own or incorporated alongside acupuncture, cupping and Tui Na as part of an individualised Chinese medicine treatment.
