Female Fertility & Acupuncture

Female fertility is influenced by many factors, including age, ovulation, egg quality, ovarian reserve, hormonal health, menstrual cycle regularity and the health of the reproductive system.

For some women there may be an identified reason for difficulty conceiving, while for others there may be no clear explanation. Fertility care can also involve significant physical and emotional stress, particularly when trying to conceive for an extended period or undergoing assisted reproductive treatment.

Acupuncture for Female Fertility

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine may be used as a complementary approach for women who are trying to conceive naturally or undergoing fertility treatment such as IVF or IUI.

Treatment is tailored to the individual and may focus on menstrual cycle health, ovulation, reproductive health, sleep, stress and nervous system regulation.

Where possible, I recommend beginning treatment around three months before trying to conceive or commencing fertility treatment. This gives us time to work across several menstrual cycles and address any areas of health that may benefit from support.

Acupuncture can also be incorporated throughout an IVF cycle, with treatment adapted according to the different stages of stimulation, egg collection, embryo transfer and the post-transfer period.

Fertility Through a Chinese Medicine Lens

Chinese medicine places considerable importance on the menstrual cycle as a reflection of reproductive health.

Treatment considers factors such as cycle length and regularity, menstrual flow, period pain, ovulation, cervical mucus, PMS, sleep, digestion, energy and emotional wellbeing. Two women experiencing difficulty conceiving may therefore receive very different treatments.

Where appropriate, treatment may combine acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Chinese medicine dietetics and lifestyle advice to create an individualised approach to fertility and reproductive health.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are designed to work alongside appropriate fertility investigations and medical care where required.
