Chinese Herbal Medicine in Melbourne
Individualised herbal medicine grounded in classical chinese medicine
What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine is one of the major therapeutic branches of Chinese medicine and has developed over thousands of years of clinical practice.
Rather than selecting a herb simply because it is associated with a particular symptom or condition, Chinese herbal medicine traditionally uses combinations of herbs formulated according to the individual’s overall presentation.
A consultation considers your primary health concerns alongside other aspects of your health, which may include digestion, sleep, energy, temperature, appetite, stress, menstrual health and other symptoms. Traditional diagnostic methods such as pulse and tongue diagnosis may also be used.
From this information, an individualised herbal formula can be selected and adjusted as your presentation changes.
An Individualised Approach
Chinese herbal medicine is based on the understanding that two people with the same biomedical diagnosis may present very differently and therefore require different treatment approaches.
Rather than using a one-size-fits-all prescription, herbs are traditionally combined into formulas in which individual ingredients work together to create a particular therapeutic strategy.
Dr Sonic’s approach is grounded in the classical foundations of Chinese medicine while recognising the importance of contemporary healthcare, medical diagnoses, medications and appropriate multidisciplinary care.
What Can Chinese Herbal Medicine Be Used For?
Chinese herbal medicine is used within Chinese medicine across a broad range of health presentations. Areas of particular clinical interest within Dr Sonic’s practice include digestive health, chronic and complex health concerns, sleep and stress, women’s health and fertility, men’s health, pain and musculoskeletal health, neurological presentations and supporting the broader health needs of neurodivergent individuals.
A Classical Approach
Chinese herbal medicine has an extensive written history, with classical medical texts that have shaped clinical practice for almost two thousand years.
Dr Sonic has undertaken advanced postgraduate training in Classical Chinese Medicine and is a Diplomate of the Institute of Classics in East Asian Medicine (ICEAM), an international organisation dedicated to the study and clinical application of classical East Asian medicine.
His herbal practice draws particularly on the classical traditions of the Shang Han Lun and Jin Gui Yao Lue, foundational texts that continue to inform the diagnosis and prescription of classical herbal formulas today.
This approach emphasises understanding the pattern expressed by the individual as a whole, rather than simply prescribing herbs according to the name of a disease or symptom.
