Acupuncture for breech Presentation
Breech Presentation
A breech presentation occurs when a baby is positioned bottom or feet first rather than head-down in the later stages of pregnancy. While many babies naturally turn as pregnancy progresses, some remain breech closer to birth.
Acupuncture & Moxibustion for Breech
Chinese medicine has a long history of using moxibustion, sometimes alongside acupuncture, to support women when their baby is presenting breech.
Moxibustion involves gently warming an acupuncture point with Mona. For breech presentation, the point most commonly used is Bladder 67, located beside the little toe.
The aim isn’t to physically turn the baby, but rather to encourage the body’s natural processes and create an opportunity for the baby to move into a head-down position themselves.
Research has investigated moxibustion at BL67 for breech presentation, with evidence suggesting that it may reduce the likelihood of a baby remaining in a non-head-down position at birth when used alongside usual care.
When Should I Come In?
I generally recommend beginning treatment starting at around 34 weeks if your baby remains breech.
During your appointment, I can use acupuncture and moxibustion where appropriate and show you how to safely continue moxibustion at home between treatments.
Moxibustion is used alongside your normal antenatal care and does not replace assessment or recommendations from your midwife or obstetrician.
If your baby is breech and you’d like to discuss whether acupuncture and moxibustion may be appropriate for you, please get in touch!
