Bell’s Palsy & Acupuncture

Bell’s palsy is a condition involving sudden weakness or paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face, caused by dysfunction of the facial nerve.

Symptoms can include facial drooping, difficulty closing the eye, changes in smiling or facial expression, altered taste, discomfort around the ear and changes in tear or saliva production. Recovery varies between individuals, with many people improving over time.

Acupuncture for Bell’s Palsy

Acupuncture may be used as a complementary therapy during recovery from Bell’s palsy, alongside appropriate medical treatment.

Treatment is tailored to the stage and severity of the condition and may incorporate facial acupuncture, body acupuncture and electroacupuncture where appropriate. The focus is on supporting facial nerve recovery, muscle function and the management of associated symptoms.

Treatment can be adapted as recovery progresses, particularly where residual weakness, facial tightness or altered movement remains.

An Individualised Approach to Facial Nerve Recovery

Bell’s palsy can affect different branches of the facial nerve and muscles to varying degrees, so treatment is adapted according to the individual’s presentation.

We consider which facial movements are affected, sensation, eye closure, facial symmetry, pain or tightness and how recovery is progressing over time.

Sudden facial weakness should always receive urgent medical assessment, as other conditions, including stroke, can cause similar symptoms.
