Autism Support & Acupuncture

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that can influence how a person experiences, processes and interacts with the world around them. Every autistic person is different, with their own strengths, needs and experiences.

Some autistic people may also experience challenges with sleep, stress, anxiety, sensory overwhelm, emotional regulation or digestive health, which can have an impact on day-to-day wellbeing.

Acupuncture for Autistic People

Acupuncture may be used as a complementary therapy to support wellbeing, rather than as a treatment for autism itself.

Treatment is tailored to the individual and may focus on areas they would specifically like support with, such as sleep, stress, relaxation, digestive symptoms or physical tension.

Treatments are also adapted to each person’s individual sensory needs and preferences. This may include adjusting lighting, sound, communication, positioning, the number of needles used, treatment duration and the amount of physical contact involved. The aim is to create a treatment environment that feels comfortable, predictable and supportive for the individual.

Autism Through a Chinese Medicine Lens

Chinese medicine treatment focuses on the individual rather than a diagnostic label.

My approach is neurodiversity-affirming. Autism is not something I am trying to cure or change. Instead, the aim is to understand each person’s individual presentation and provide support for the aspects of their health and wellbeing that they would like help with.

Acupuncture can be used alongside other appropriate medical, psychological, occupational therapy and allied health supports.
