Acupuncture Melbourne

individualised acupuncture and chinese medicine with dr sonic

Acupuncture is one of the primary treatment methods used within Chinese medicine and has been practised for thousands of years. It involves the insertion of very fine, sterile, single-use needles into carefully selected points on the body to stimulate a therapeutic response.

Treatment is individually tailored. Rather than simply treating the location of a symptom, Chinese medicine considers the person as a whole, looking at how different symptoms, body systems, lifestyle and overall patterns of health may be connected.

Dr Sonic Searle provides acupuncture in Melbourne from clinics in Caulfield, Hawthorn and Mt Evelyn, combining traditional Chinese medicine principles with experience working within contemporary integrative healthcare.

An Individualised Approach to Treatment

No two people experience health and illness in exactly the same way, and acupuncture treatment reflects this.

A consultation may explore not only your primary reason for seeking treatment, but also areas such as sleep, digestion, energy, stress, pain, temperature, appetite and general wellbeing. Chinese medicine diagnostic methods, including pulse and tongue diagnosis, may also form part of the consultation.

From this information, an individual treatment plan is developed. Acupuncture may be used alone or, where appropriate, alongside Chinese herbal medicine, moxibustion, cupping, Gua Sha, Tui Na, dietary and lifestyle guidance or red light therapy

What Can Acupuncture Be Used For

People seek acupuncture for a wide range of health concerns. In my practice, areas of particular clinical interest include pain and musculoskeletal conditions, chronic and complex health, digestive health, neurological conditions, stress and sleep, fertility and pregnancy, men’s health, and supporting neurodivergent individuals including those with ADHD and autism.

What to Expect

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, and most people are surprised by how gentle the treatment feels. You may feel a small pinch as a needle is inserted, followed by sensations such as tingling, warmth, heaviness, or a gentle spreading sensation around the point.

These sensations are normal and may come and go throughout the treatment. Ultimately, acupuncture is a deeply relaxing and enjoyable experience, many people find themselves drifting into a meditative state or even falling asleep while the needles are in place.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, acupuncture works by influencing the flow of Qi and Blood through a network of channels known as meridians. By stimulating specific acupuncture points, treatment aims to restore healthy movement, regulate areas of imbalance, ease pain and support the body’s innate capacity to heal.

From a modern biomedical perspective, research suggests acupuncture produces effects through multiple interacting mechanisms involving the nervous system, connective tissue, local circulation and neurochemical signalling.

Needle stimulation can activate sensory nerve fibres and influence signalling within the spinal cord and brain, including pathways involved in pain modulation and autonomic nervous system regulation. Research has also demonstrated effects on local blood flow and the release of naturally occurring substances involved in pain regulation and physiological function.

What Should I Wear?

Where possible, we recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment. This makes it easier to access commonly used acupuncture points on the arms, legs, abdomen and back.

Don’t worry if this isn’t possible, There are plenty of towels are available for appropriate draping so that you remain covered, comfortable and warm throughout your treatment, if you have to remove any clothing.
