Sciatica & Acupuncture

Sciatica refers to pain associated with irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg.

Symptoms can include sharp, burning or aching pain, as well as tingling, numbness or weakness that may travel from the lower back or buttock into the thigh, calf or foot. Symptoms can vary considerably depending on where and why the nerve is being irritated.

Acupuncture for Sciatica

Acupuncture is commonly used as part of the management of sciatic pain and associated lower back pain.

Treatment may focus on reducing pain and muscular tension around the lower back, hips and legs, while also considering the areas through which the sciatic nerve travels.

Depending on the presentation, acupuncture may be used locally around the affected area as well as at points further away from the site of pain. Techniques such as electroacupuncture may also be incorporated where appropriate.

Sciatica Through a Chinese Medicine Lens

Chinese medicine treatment considers not only where the pain is felt, but also its location, quality, severity and what makes it better or worse.

Two people experiencing sciatica may therefore receive quite different acupuncture treatments. The aim is to address the immediate pain while also considering the underlying pattern contributing to the person’s presentation.

Where sciatica is caused by an underlying structural problem, acupuncture is used as part of an appropriate broader management plan rather than as a replacement for necessary medical care.
