Menopause & Acupuncture
Menopause is a natural stage of life that occurs as reproductive hormone levels change and menstrual cycles eventually cease. The transition leading up to menopause, known as perimenopause, can begin several years earlier.
For some women this transition is relatively smooth, while others experience symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, disrupted sleep, mood changes, anxiety, fatigue, headaches, brain fog and changes to their menstrual cycle.
Acupuncture for Menopause
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine may be used as a complementary approach to support women experiencing symptoms during perimenopause and menopause.
Treatment is tailored to the individual and may focus on concerns such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, stress, headaches and nervous system regulation.
Acupuncture can also be used alongside other approaches to menopause management, including menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) where appropriate.
Menopause Through a Chinese Medicine Lens
Chinese medicine views menopause as an important transition rather than simply a collection of symptoms.
Treatment considers the woman’s individual presentation, including temperature changes, sweating, sleep, energy, mood, digestion and other symptoms. Two women experiencing menopause may therefore receive very different treatments.
Where appropriate, treatment may combine acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Chinese medicine dietetics and lifestyle advice to provide an individualised approach to navigating this transition.
