Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) & Acupuncture
Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, commonly known as MCAS, is a condition involving inappropriate or excessive activation of mast cells and the release of chemical mediators such as histamine.
Symptoms can affect multiple systems of the body and may include flushing, itching, digestive disturbances, headaches, fatigue, dizziness, palpitations and reactions to foods, medications or environmental triggers. The presentation can vary considerably between individuals.
Acupuncture for MCAS
Acupuncture may be used as a complementary therapy to support people living with MCAS and some of the symptoms associated with the condition.
Treatment is individualised and may focus on areas such as digestive symptoms, headaches, sleep, stress and nervous system regulation, depending on how MCAS is presenting for the individual. The main aim is to regulate the nervous system so that it can down regulate the mast cells.
People with MCAS can also be particularly sensitive to different forms of stimulation. Treatment can therefore be adapted using a gentle approach, fewer needles and careful consideration of the person’s individual sensitivities and tolerance.
MCAS Through a Chinese Medicine Lens
Chinese medicine considers the person’s overall pattern rather than the diagnosis alone.
Treatment may take into account digestion, skin symptoms, temperature regulation, energy, sleep, stress and other accompanying symptoms. Two people diagnosed with MCAS may therefore receive very different treatments.
The aim is to provide individualised support for symptoms and nervous system regulation, alongside appropriate medical management and avoidance of known triggers where necessary.
