Insomnia & Acupuncture
Insomnia is more than simply having the occasional bad night’s sleep. It can involve difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently during the night, waking too early, or sleeping without feeling properly rested.
Over time, poor sleep can affect energy, concentration, mood, stress levels and overall quality of life, while stress and anxiety can themselves make sleep more difficult, creating a frustrating cycle.
Acupuncture for Insomnia
Acupuncture may be used as part of a broader approach to improving sleep and addressing factors that may be contributing to insomnia.
Treatment often focuses on promoting relaxation and supporting regulation of the nervous system, particularly when difficulty sleeping is associated with stress, anxiety or an inability to switch off.
Rather than simply focusing on the number of hours slept, treatment considers the individual’s overall sleep pattern, including difficulty falling asleep, waking during the night, early waking and how refreshed they feel in the morning.
Insomnia Through a Chinese Medicine Lens
Chinese medicine recognises that there can be different underlying patterns behind poor sleep.
Two people with insomnia may therefore receive very different treatments. Factors such as stress, emotional wellbeing, digestion, energy levels, body temperature and the timing and nature of night waking may all help determine the individual treatment approach.
The aim is to address both the sleep disturbance itself and the underlying pattern that may be contributing to it, supporting more settled and restorative sleep.
