Depression & Acupuncture

Depression can affect much more than mood. It can influence energy, motivation, sleep, concentration, appetite, relationships and the ability to enjoy everyday life. For some people it may occur during a particularly difficult period, while for others it can be a longer-term or recurring condition.

Depression can also have a significant physical component, with symptoms such as fatigue, disrupted sleep, digestive changes, headaches and muscular tension occurring alongside emotional symptoms.

Acupuncture for Depression

Acupuncture may be used as a complementary therapy to support people experiencing depression and associated symptoms.

Treatment is individualised and may focus on areas such as sleep, stress, fatigue, physical tension and nervous system regulation, depending on how depression is affecting the person.

Acupuncture is not intended to replace psychological therapy, antidepressant medication or other appropriate mental health care. Instead, it can be incorporated alongside these treatments as part of a broader approach to supporting mental and physical health.

Depression Through a Chinese Medicine Lens

Chinese medicine recognises the close relationship between emotional and physical health and does not view depression as the same presentation in every person.

Treatment considers factors such as mood, motivation, sleep, energy, appetite, digestion, stress and other accompanying symptoms. This means two people experiencing depression may receive quite different treatments.

The aim is to support the individual as a whole, addressing both their emotional wellbeing and the physical symptoms that may accompany depression.
