Bloating & Acupuncture
Bloating is a common digestive symptom that can cause the abdomen to feel full, tight, swollen or uncomfortable. It may occur after eating or persist throughout the day and can sometimes be accompanied by gas, abdominal discomfort or changes in bowel movements.
There are many possible contributors to bloating, including diet, constipation, food intolerances, changes in gut motility, IBS and other digestive conditions.
Acupuncture for Bloating
Acupuncture may be used as a complementary therapy to support digestive function and help manage symptoms associated with bloating.
Treatment is individualised and may focus on abdominal discomfort, bowel regularity, digestive function and stress, particularly when symptoms appear to be influenced by the gut-brain connection.
Where appropriate, acupuncture may be combined with Chinese herbal medicine and dietary advice as part of a broader approach to digestive health.
Bloating Through a Chinese Medicine Lens
Chinese medicine considers bloating to be a symptom of an imbalance rather than its own condition.
Treatment considers factors such as when the bloating occurs, foods that trigger it, appetite, bowel movements, abdominal pain, stress and energy levels. Two people experiencing similar bloating may therefore receive very different treatments.
The aim is to address both the immediate digestive symptoms and the underlying Chinese medicine pattern contributing to them.
Persistent or unexplained bloating should also be appropriately medically investigated, particularly when it is new, worsening or accompanied by other concerning symptoms.
